Behind The Scenes of a Philocaly Flip Up Hair Extension Course
Mar 05, 2023
With quality being at the core of EVERYTHING we do at Philocaly Hair, our educational hair extension courses are no exception!
We are always encouraging stylists to challenge their craft, grow their skills, and expand on their tool belt by learning the most exciting extension methods on the market. We know that adding extensions to your service offering is more than just a few extra dollars to take home at the end of the day.
Offering extensions can actually lead to better dollars and a better lifestyle in the long run. The payout is great, and the payoff of a course is well worth it! This is why we’re so proud to kick-start this process with our hair extension education.
We offer a variety of courses, teaching multiple hair extension techniques. This includes our og beaded row, flip up, nano bead, tape-in, and keratin tip certification.
While each method is fabulous in its own right, we’re going to go behind the scenes of a flip up application course and learn what it’s all about. Come along and see what really happens during one of Philocaly’s flip up courses featuring our fabulous educator, Mo.
What is the flip up method?
The flip up method is our very own method created by Creative Director, Abbey Brookee for Philocaly Hair. With this method, you can install hand-tied wefts, genius wefts, and flat wefts. This method utilizes the same proven installation techniques as the original beaded row method but incorporates a new stitching pattern and a new way to place the wefts so that the beads are undetectable and tension is reduced. Essentially, when you pull your hair back into a ponytail, there is not a bead in sight! This method creates maximum length and fullness while resulting in zero damage, making it perfect for the most fine-haired clients.
Here are a few added benefits:
- Quick install than other methods (we’re talking 2-4 hours)
- Allows clients to go longer in between maintenance appointments (the average time frame your client will wait in between appointments is 6-9 weeks)
- No adhesives are used for this method
- No need for a major haircut on the hair extensions at your maintenance appointments since rows are installed at the same place on the head at your maintenance appointments, keeping the length of hair extensions as long as possible for its lifespan
What tools do stylists need for a flip up hair extension course?
At every flip up certification, stylists will receive a starter kit (included with your registration). The kit is valued at $250 and includes 1 opener/remover, 1 bead threader, 2 needles, colours of beads, alligator clips, and Philocaly practice hair.
What happens at a flip up hair extension course?
Day one starts off with a bang with the 3 C’s! Care. Cost. Consultation. Your educator will go through exactly how much hair to use dependent on your client’s hair type and thickness, how much you should be charging for the hair and service, how to explain to your client how much use they will get out of the extensions, and how your client can prolong the life of their extensions after their install – essentially how can they get the most out of their dollar!
The morning consists of a mannequin demo where your educator will first use white beads and white thread to ensure you are able to clearly see exactly how the beads should lay and how the thread should be sewn.
Once stylists have a general idea, your educator will start demonstrating the method on a live model. This time using beads and thread that match the model’s hair. Your educator will install two full rows and also demonstrate how to cut along the perimeter, frame the face, and add movement throughout the body of the hair.
The rest of the day is all about practicing your beadwork and ensuring clean sections throughout the install.
Day two starts with a recap of everything covered in day one and another demo (if needed). Next on the agenda, stylists will grab their mannequins and attempt the method themselves. First, you will do a practice row on the bottom, then move to a second row on the top, along with a mini row on the nape of the neck. If stylists are feeling extra motivated, there is an opportunity here to practice on each other’s hair.
The remainder of the day consists of going through questions, concerns, and a recap of the course.
What happens after the certification course?
After the class is when the magic starts to take place! We love to see how students bring this education back to their salon. Once you complete the course, you’ll receive a Philocaly certificate, and Philocaly verified decals that you can show off at your station. You’ll also receive permanent access to our Continuing Education Portal. Here, you’ll be able to access videos on the method that you’ve learned, just in case you ever need to go back to refresh your knowledge. You’ll also have access to expert advice on best practices for matching, blending, cutting, and pricing your extensions.
And it doesn’t stop there. Once you’re Philocaly verified in whichever method you choose, you’ll be added to the Verified Salon Locator on our website. Once you’re added to this page, customers worldwide can find out who is offering Philocaly extension installs in their area. This brings valuable extension clients right to you!
